Jerry's a fascinating mix of the completely ingenuous and the utterly deceitful. Yet he's also guileless; even though he set these horrible events in motion, he's surprised when they go wrong. Peter Stormare , who played the role of Gaear was supposed to play the part of Eddie Dane in the Coens' earlier film Miller's Crossing, but was unable to commit due to commitments to a stage production of Hamlet.
When he was not filming, he would visit neighboring places with Swedish sounding names. Stormare noted that his character was different from his real life personality.
At first, Frances McDormand was excited about working with the Coens, but was rather surprised when she found out that they wrote Marge for her. McDormand felt that what separated Marge from other female characters written by the Coens is that the latter fell short. She learned how to use and fire a gun and spent days talking with a police officer that was pregnant much like Marge and also developed a backstory for her character along with John Carroll Lynch.
After seeing the movie, McDormand noted that much of Marge was modeled after her sister Dorothy who is a Disciples of Christ minister and chaplain. In Minnesota, St. Emmit refuses, and the brothers argue over their father's inheritance that they had traded each other: Emmit traded the Corvette left to him with Ray, in exchange for a valuable stamp collection. Ray later blackmails another parolee, Maurice LeFay Scoot McNairy , who has failed a drug test, and coerces him into stealing Emmit's remaining stamp. However, Maurice loses the address and only partially remembers it. Meanwhile, Emmit seeks to repay a business loan obtained two years ago from a shady corporation, only to be informed by the company's representative V.

In Eden Valley, police chief Gloria Burgle Carrie Coon and her teenage son Nathan Graham Verchere leave the house of her stepfather Ennis Scott Hylands , but return for a forgotten gift to find him dead and the house ransacked. Because of the name and address mix-up, Maurice has mistakenly robbed the wrong Stussy, and killed him. Nikki suggests Ray make peace with his brother while she steals the stamp. He cordially visits Emmit and the two make peace, which gives Nikki enough time to search his home office.
